hi Kanishk,
Sorry for the delay

Following is the complete procedure for applying to a foreign MBA School through GMAT and some dos and donts.

GMAT:
You have to report your GMAT scores to the university along with your applications. For complete information about GMAT, check out: http://www.mba.com/mba/thegmat

Going through this website is a must for any GMAT aspirant. Do get back to me with particular queries. You also need to register months before appearing for the GMAT exam and register for your test centre here.

TOEFL:
In addition to GMAT, most international students from non-English speaking countries have to take TOEFL exam.

After you have appeared for your GMAT

Send enquiries at least 15 to 18 months before the proposed date of admission. There are two ways to get application forms.

Requesting Application Forms via email : You can request application forms from the universities website. Most universities have a form on their website which can be completed online to request application material.
Downloading from the university website : Many universities have a downloadable and ready to print versions of their application forms on the net. These can be used for applying just as regular forms.

Work History

The pre-requisites change every year. However schools like Harvard, Wharton, etc. do not ask for work-experience because they are looking for dynamic students who through their application (which consists of your past academic record, your recommendations from people at work/ your college authorities) can see through the genuine brilliance of a candidate. They believe that a student who has been good till now, will do well in their MBA school as well. So they are not hell-bent upon work –expereince as a pre-requisite. But most schools like Kellog, Stanford, Yale, INSEAD, NUS, Colombia – ask for work experience and that too a minimum of two years.

A detailed Résumé is an important part of your application. It should include all information of professional work experience along with details like position(s) held, achievements and scope of work.

Business School essay

The personal essays play a very important role in the process of evaluating your application for admission to the MBA program. They give the faculty assessing your application their most significant impression of you as an individual. This section is the key to distinguish your application from other suitable candidates and a chance to market yourself.

Some courses like Business School courses will have their own essay questions and format. Others may ask for a résumé or reasons for applying to that particular course.

Interviews

This is the last leg of your entry into the business school. These interviews are usually informal and more of an opportunity to exchange information. The interviewer will try to judge your abilities and interests.

Ideally, for the top 10 Business Schools you need a 700+ score. However, let’s not label GMAT only on the basis of one’s score. You could have scored less than 700 but on the basis of excellent recommendations from your superiors at work, or people whom you have worked under during your past employments; your above average academic record; and your clarity of thought expressed in the essays submitted to the business school you could find yourself in the top Business school.

Your GMAT score is valid for five years. If at first don’t succeed, you can take the GMAT exam again. Remember, though, that all of your GMAT scores from the past 5 years will appear on your Official Score Report. However it is generallt recommended to appear maximum twice, as all your attempts are reported to the schools and too many attempts may reflect your insecurity and lack of self-confidence.

Finally, I would suggest that if you are appearing for the exam in the near future you must come down to the centre for a counselling on GMAT because GMAT is a long story that cannot be cut short. Am sure there are many questions on your mind that my mail has not been able to answer.

Would be happy to meet up with you on the same at any of the centres that are convenient to you.

P.S.-please pour in more queries.

Hi

I would like to know ,when would the classes for GMAT be conducted?

As i am looking for ISB (GMAT Latest by Aug 10),Do i need to join some good GMAT institute like jamboree? At the time of registration,it was told to me that MBA GURU does provide proper preparation, however now it is disclosed that the total number of classes for GMAT would be only 7,which is very less for preparation as other institutes do train students for 11 weeks.

I request ,to let us know about the GMAT preparation in mba guru.To be specific, what would be the number of classes and what all topics would be covered?

I also request you to start these sessions in Rajouri Garden Batch ,as it was also told to me that classes would be conducted at RGC also.Else i can seek other options for GMAT preparations myself.

Thanks ,

Vinod,

Request you to talk to Nupur at your centre or mail your issue at feedback@rootseducation.com. You should get a reply within a couple of days.

My take - 7-8 classes for GMAT are sufficient for people taking GMAT after complete preparation of CAT (yours might be a different case as you're eyeing Aug-10 for GMAT). These 7-8 session at MBAGuru typically cover the "non-overlap" areas of CAT and GMAT.

Thanks
Mohit

Hi Mohit ,

Thanks for info.

About GMAT , I already have had a word with nupur. And i am looking forward for this.

I also suggest you if you can provide more than 7 sessions for GMAT,since it requires a lot of different skills as used in critical reasoning and altogether different approach for RC.

With due Regards ,
