SELECTION PROCESS FOR PGDM AND PGDCM PROGRAMS

Other than overseas candidates

Selections for the post-graduate programs PGDM and PGDCM are done through two-stage processes. In the first stage, candidates appear in CAT. In the second stage, candidates appear before a panel for group discussion (GD) and personal interview (PI). For PGDM, candidates are short-listed for GD and PI based on CAT performance. For PGDCM, the interview short-list will be prepared based on multiple criteria such as CAT score, academic background and performance and relevant work experience. Candidates short-listed for PGDCM will have to appear for a separate Personal Interview, which will also evaluate candidates’ competence and interest in ICT. A candidate (including a reserved category

candidate) to be short-listed for GD and PI for admission to post-graduate-programs PGDM and PGDCM should obtain a minimum of 20%, 20% and 10% in ‘quantitative’, ‘logic and data interpretation’ and ‘verbal’ sections, respectively. The actual cut-off used for short-listing, however, may be higher than the minimum cut-off and would depend upon the performance of candidates in CAT 2009. Cut-off may be different for different categories (e.g. General, SC, ST, OBC and PWD) of candidates. Final selection for both the programs PGDM and PGDCM is made using multiple criteria of performance, such as performance in CAT, group discussion, personal interview, academic background and performance, extra-curricular activities and relevant work experience.

Overseas candidates

Indians and foreign nationals living, working or studying outside India at least for the period January 1, 2009 - February 15, 2010 are considered as overseas candidates. Candidates residing in neighboring countries like Nepal from which there are no entry restrictions to India, are not considered as "overseas candidates". Overseas candidates are admitted based on performance in GMAT, academic performance, referees’ recommendations, group discussion and personal interview. The Institute reserves the right to exempt an overseas candidate from personal interview. Overseas applicants can directly download the Application Form from the Institute’s website on or after September 14, 2009. Candidates should refer to the Institute’s website for further details. Candidates may be required to visit India for GD & PI in March/April 2010. The GMAT score of candidates selected for 2009-2011 batch ranged from 700 to 770.

Information on Placements 2009

40% of the students chose finance portfolios, both in India and abroad. Some of the major recruiters for finance during the final placement process were Jaypee Capital, Futures First, ICICI Lombard and Allegro Financial Services. Some of the firms are Barclays Capital, Merrill Lynch, JP Morgan Chase, Morgan Stanley, Royal Bank of Scotland and Credit Suisse. 21% of the students were offered consulting profiles across the world. The biggest recruiter this time was McKinsey. IIM Calcutta played host to Frost and Sullivan, first-time recruiters in India, who made their highest number of offers to IIMC. All profiles offered by them were international. Other big recruiters were Boston Consulting Group, Cognizant Business Consulting, Bain and Company, Deloitte, Accenture and A T Kearney.

Marketing profiles were offered by 27% of the companies that came to campus. Some of the regular recruiters here were Hindustan Unilever, Procter and Gamble, ITC and Nokia. Public Sector Units such as IOCL and Andrew Yule offered marketing positions.

A large number of international offers were made to the students, with locations all over the globe. Hong Kong, London, Singapore and New York were locations that were prominently offered by banking and consulting firms.

Pay Packages

As expected, this year’s pay packages saw a dip from last time, on an average. The domestic average this year has been Rs. 12.7 Lakhs, with the highest offer at Rs. 60 Lakhs per annum. The international scenario, though, threw in a surprise. The average international package, exclusive of bonus, came up to USD 86,785. With the bonus factored in, the package sizes exceed those of last year’s. While it may be noted that the average salary fell by around 23% this time, it has to be emphasized that the firms that visited campus last year did not lower their packages this year. The intake per company had come down, resulting in the fall in package.
