CAT Lessons from sports

Sometimes a fantastic sportsperson gets a lot of flak for one bad performance. Just one off day in a match, or worse still, a trophy lost, many expectations and hopes shattered, and the entire past seems forgotten and the entire future hopeless.

Being unfairly harsh because of one instance of failure is not right; although neither is living in the past and turning a blind eye to facts.

To reach a fairer and more useful conclusion, it is important NOT to see that particular match as the only relevant point. The key is to look back into the recent past and see if something similar has been happening more often than not incase of that player.

That will give you a better and more useful answer.

That’s also the logic you need to apply when you look at your AIRCAT (mock CAT) scores and performance, or evaluate your preparation and performance in any other manner.
In a single instance, anything can happen – good or bad. Look for things that are happening repeatedly and that is what will give you insights into what you need to change or retain.

About the author: Deekshant has sleep-walked through several 100 and 99.9 %iles in practically every section of the CAT. That he is a cricket fan and he writes okay is evident from most of his posts. 1000s of our students swear that he can motivate almost anyone to double his/her percentile through very simple yet powerful inputs. And that’s why every MBAGuru student has direct access to him via mail and Telegram. Oddly, he somehow also finds the time to write songs professionally. And yes … almost missed this … he is an alumnus of IIT Delhi & IIM Cal 🙂
