In our experience of training 1000s and 1000s of CAT aspirants, a solid CAT Prep requires a total of approximately 1000 hours for most students (ofcourse it could mean 700-800 if you are brilliant or 1200-1250 if you have a lot to improve upon).
If you have 400 days left to go for CAT-21, with some simple math, it comes to around 2.5 hours of daily effort – that is if you start NOW, today! Come rain or sun, holidays or exams, most CAT aspirants would need that kind of an investment for their CAT preparation DAILY to maximize their chances of success at cracking the CAT.
More practically, you should take off a few weeks from the total of say 400 days to account for priorities such as your college exams, family commitments, holidays, breaks to preserve yourself, any illness, and so on – that means you may have less than 330 days or you may need more than 3 hours of daily prep on all days apart from these contingencies.
Start a little late – say 2 months from now – and this shoots up to nearly 4 hours daily. And it gives you fewer chances to bounce back from unforeseen challenges – such as say a disrupted academic calendar even next year due to COVID.
So, with the delay of every few weeks, the daily time you would need keep rising pretty much like the required run rate going up after each maiden over in a limited over match. That’s how the pressure builds and after one stage gets the better of many.
How do you stop that from happening? You know the answer – even if you are capable of hitting boundaries at the end, taking singles right now will keep you in the game. Don’t just rely on your access to a top CAT coaching institute.
Finally, the effort has to be yours, even if you get the best guidance from a faculty pool of CAT 99+percentilers. No one can reduce the number of hours you need to put in (the ADAPTIVE CAT Coaching at MBAGuru can surely maximize your improvement from these hours! But again there are no short-cuts, just best routes!)
About the author: Deekshant has sleep-walked through several 100 and 99.9 %iles in practically every section of the CAT. That he is a cricket fan and he writes okay is evident from most of his posts. 1000s of our students swear that he can motivate almost anyone to double his/her percentile through very simple yet powerful inputs. And that’s why every MBAGuru student has direct access to him via mail and Telegram. Oddly, he somehow also finds the time to write songs professionally. And yes … almost missed this … he is an alumnus of IIT Delhi & IIM Cal
